Caloris Q&A: Meet Carlos Sanchez, Project Engineer

Carlos Sanchez just joined Caloris as a project engineer in our Evaporation & Membrane Filtration group. Get to know him here.

Caloris: How did you get involved in engineering?

Carlos: I studied Chemical Engineering in Guadalajara, Mexico, because I liked the strong foundation it provided in physics and chemistry.

What I didn’t realize at the time was how much of the curriculum would involve machinery and equipment! I ended up gravitating toward Finance and completing the curriculum in that field as well.

After graduating, I started working as a Risk Analyst for a large lender. Although I enjoyed the analytical side of the work, I quickly realized I was missing something: the troubleshooting, problem-solving, and hands-on aspect of engineering. That realization led me to pursue a side project helping startups develop and improve their process lines. Before I knew it, that side project had turned into a career in engineering. I guess I took the scenic route!

Caloris: What do you enjoy most about your work?

Carlos: The best part is when you can take an idea that started as a rough concept and turn it into something that actually works and seems to have a life of its own. I also enjoy that engineering sits right at the intersection of analytical thinking and creativity; you need both to solve some of the more interesting problems.

You are based in Michigan. What do you like most about living/working there?

Carlos: Home for me is currently Grand Rapids, Michigan. It’s known as “Beer City USA,” which by itself is a pretty good reason to live here!

Beyond the beer, I really enjoy having four distinct seasons and all the outdoor activities they make possible. Within about an hour of home, there are plenty of outdoor adventures. I especially enjoy being able to share those activities with my wife and daughter.

Caloris: What are your hobbies?

Carlos: I’m originally from Mexico and lived in a small beachside town of about 1,000 people before coming to the USA. Growing up, seafood, fishing, and surfing were some of my biggest hobbies, and they’re things I still try to enjoy today. At the same time, I grew up climbing mountains with my dad, so being outdoors has always been a big part of my life. Every Sunday, I fire up my charcoal grill! Here in Michigan, I do a lot of skating, biking, and skiing, and I’m hoping to start surfing again before winter comes.

Caloris: What’s your favorite cheese?

Carlos: BellaVitano! It’s a Wisconsin cheese, and I’m a big fan of it.

Caloris: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Carlos: Vanilla. I eat it as often as my lactose intolerance will allow!

Caloris: Anything else you would like to share?

Carlos: One of the things I’ve learned from my somewhat unconventional career path is that the skills you develop in one field don’t necessarily stay there. My background in finance ended up becoming surprisingly useful in engineering because analytical thinking, understanding risk, and breaking down complex problems are valuable in both worlds.

Outside of work, though, my favorite role is being a husband and dad. I enjoy finding new things to do outdoors with my family and making the most of our time together.
