Karl Ludwig recently joined Caloris in the Mechanical Design Group as a Welding Design Engineer. Get to know him here.
Caloris: How did you get involved in design?
Karl: Welding fascinated me in high school, so I went to a technical college to learn to weld. While working as a pipe welder, I was inspired to learn more about design, drafting, metallurgy (the science of metals), and fabrication. Each of these are aspects of welding engineering, which is why I decided to pursue an education and career in this field.
Caloris: What do you enjoy most about your work?
Karl: I enjoy working with the science-to skill relationship in welding. Science can help explain the impacts of welding on a metal, and a welder or welding operator’s skill is key to controlling those impacts.
Caloris: You are based in Minnesota. What do you like most about living/working there?
Karl: The community of friends and family that I have in Minnesota is what I most enjoy about living here.
Caloris: What are your hobbies? Anything else fun you’d like to share?
Karl: I enjoy hiking, especially where there is little to no trail.
Caloris: What’s your favorite cheese?
Karl: My favorite cheese is pepper jack.
Caloris: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Karl: Cinnamon-flavored ice cream (especially in sparkling apple cider) is my favorite.
