Caloris Q&A: Meet Lee Cook, Controller

Lee Cook recently joined Caloris as our new Controller. Get to know him here.

Caloris: How did you get involved in your field?

Lee: Before I took my first accounting class in high school, I envisioned being a lawyer.

However, I was drawn to the numbers and problem-solving associated with the accounting profession. I started my career in public accounting, but knew relatively quickly that I wanted to get away from only compliance reporting and help a team run its business.

Caloris: What do you enjoy most about your work?

Lee: Accounting is much more than numbers, or debits and credits. Oftentimes it is a complicated puzzle to be pieced together through data analysis, with more than one way to interpret the results. What I enjoy most is working through the process to provide meaningful information with the goal of making sound operational and financial decisions.

You are based in Maryland. What do you like most about living/working there?

Lee: I like the accessibility to water, and all the activities that go along with it. The beaches are only an hour away, and mountains are just a couple hours away. The four seasons overlap quite a bit at times, but I enjoy each of them for the different elements they bring.

Caloris: What are your hobbies? Anything else fun you’d like to share?

Lee: I enjoy family time, playing games or simply hanging out with our extended family. I’m a huge sports fan, with ice hockey being my favorite, followed by baseball, golf, and tennis. I’ve also been known to be a competitive backyard volleyball player. We purchased an RV and have enjoyed amazing family time together the last few years, with any and all kinds of outdoor activities.

Caloris: What’s your favorite cheese?

Lee: Not a big cheese fan, but I’ll go with cheddar.

Caloris: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Lee: I’m a much bigger ice cream fan, and it’s a toss up between chocolate chip cookie dough and mint chocolate chip (ONLY the green kind according to my daughter!)

Caloris: Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

Lee: My wife owns a farm and has made a part-time farmer out of me in our spare time. I do enjoy time on the tractor, when my son gives up the driver’s seat.
