Caloris Q&A: Meet Tom Schappeler, Process Engineering Manager
Q&A

As Process Engineering Manager, Tom Schappeler and his team spend a lot of time at customer sites. Get to know Tom here.

Caloris: How did you get involved in your field?

Tom: I always gravitated towards math & science, otherwise the typical engineer’s childhood of “taking stuff apart to see how it works and (hopefully) putting it back together again.” I got started in this industry through family exposure combined with an interest in heat transfer.

Caloris: What do you enjoy most about your work?

Tom: I enjoy the challenge of marrying the theoretical with the practical…navigating the tradeoffs and judgement calls required in order to build something that works well and is robust, yet can be done within a budget and is as simple as possible to build, understand, and operate.

Caloris: What do you like most about living/working in Maryland?

Tom: I like the heat, I like the seasons, I like the relatively convenient access to such a wide variety of nature…beach, mountains, bay, etc.

Caloris: What are your hobbies? Anything else fun you’d like to share?

Tom: Biking, hunting, parenting, home improvement projects.

Caloris: What’s your favorite cheese?

Tom: Anything with peppers in it. I’m not a cheese snob.

Caloris: What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Tom: Plain chocolate.

Caloris: Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?

Tom: I won’t drink coffee, milk, or wine. I bet you can’t find another adult in the US that can say the same.
