Food Safety Considerations in Membrane Filtration System Design

The quality of your membrane filtration system directly affects the safety of your product as well as product consistency, yield and uptime of your process system. If you are concentrating whey or milk, it is imperative to install and maintain a system designed with food safety and compliance in mind.

A difficult-to-clean or poorly drained system will quickly become a nightmare for your operators, creating avoidable compliance risk, downtime, lost product and requiring costly corrective actions. Make sure you are working with an equipment manufacturer that keeps cleanability and safety in mind from the start, not just during commissioning.

Caloris engineers will work with you to design a custom filtration system with the necessary hygienic mechanical design, validated cleaning capability and appropriate materials and controls for your specific situation, feed and product goals.

Safety Must Be Designed In

Sanitary membrane systems must support the regulatory, customer and quality requirements for your dairy product. Food-contact materials must be compatible with dairy products, cleaning chemicals and operating temperatures. Hygienic piping, valves, instrumentation and connections must be included. Weld quality and surface finishes need to be taken into consideration. You will need proper operating procedures and documentation/data collection in place for system verification and troubleshooting down the road.

Compliance is stronger when engineering, quality, maintenance and operations are aligned during the design phase, not after installation. Caloris will see you through the entire process to ensure your system starts and continues to operate optimally.

Sanitary Design Protects Product & Uptime

There are several sanitary design priorities we factor into each custom membrane filtration skid:
  • Fully drainable piping and equipment configurations that minimize hold-up and stagnant zones
  • Properly selected valves and hygienic components that reduce dead legs and enable effective cleaning
  • Accessible instruments, pumps, membrane housings, and valve manifolds for inspection and maintenance.
  • Separation of product, CIP, utility and recovery flows where needed to prevent cross-contamination.

Retrofit & Expansion Expertise

Caloris not only offers new filtration skids, but we can help retrofit existing skids or add capacity. If you have a filtration system installed for a different product, sanitation or automation scheme, we may be able to assist in rebuilding the system for your current needs.

Our engineers are experienced in evaluating installed membrane systems to identify opportunities to improve sanitary performance, controls, capacity, recoveries and cleanability.

If you are seeking to add capacity, we’ll help ensure that the expansion preserves product segregation, sanitary design and operational flexibility as well.
