A Caloris customer came to us with the desire to maximize their WPC-35 production capacity. They wanted to know if adding a finisher to their processing line would help increase overall WPC-35 production capacity. Caloris determined that by increasing solids to the dryer even a small amount could result in a large overall capacity increase.

The processing line already included a membrane technology step. Traditional membrane technology maxes out at 28-32% total solids for WPC-35 due to the viscosity of the feed. Nanofiltration can take it further, to 40% total solids.

An evaporator can take the feed to 45-46% total solids. It is always more energy efficient to remove water in an evaporator rather than in the dryer. Therefore, there are both operational and sustainability reasons to consider boosting evaporation in the processing line.

Adding a finisher to this customer’s existing processing line would boost the feed solids to the dryer by 5%. With the same amount of dryer water evaporation and nearly the same energy input to the dryer, this translates to a 23% boost in powder production from the dryer.
