As we enter the summer season, we want to remind our spray dryer customers of some safety basics:
Holiday Staffing: Vacation season is upon us. Now is the time to make sure all staff on all shifts are up-to-date on training and standard operating procedures. Read more about holiday staffing and spray dryer safety.
Explosion Protection: The dust created during the spray drying process comes with a risk for explosions. To minimize this risk make sure your system has adequate explosion venting and explosion suppression systems. Regular testing of these systems is a must in order to identify and correct deficiencies. You don’t want to learn about a failure of this system when you most need it to work.
Top Tip: Do NOT bolt shut over-pressure doors, which may be tempting due to CIP leakage. Likewise, DO NOT block panels or doors. There needs to be an escape route for pressure, otherwise, the only route for pressure venting will be back into your facility.
Fire Protection: Make sure your plant’s fire detection and fire suppression systems have been properly maintained and inspected. Testing and maintenance are vital. More information about fire protection and spray dryer safety is available here.
Gas Monitoring: We recommend the use of carbon monoxide detection. Learn more about making this a part of your dryer safety strategy here.
Process Monitoring and Control: These systems include temperature monitoring, pressure monitoring and emergency shutdown systems. Caloris can help you with the specifications and installation of these systems (or assessment of existing systems).
PPE: All personnel who operate and maintain the spray dryer should have access to proper personal protective equipment including goggles, gloves, masks, aprons and hearing protection.
